It’s me… The “Baller Budget Bride”

Yup, that was me… champagne taste on a beer budget. You do not understand how frugal I had to be to deliver my dream “floral explosion” wedding on a tight budget. Especially after my venue hopping and lost deposits and vendor regret… and more lost deposits. Yes, I am a true destination wedding expert now, but only due to my many mistakes and financial losses.

I’ll share more about my venue hopping experience (ya’ll I booked 3 different venues in Punta Cana - and no, not looked at, actually BOOKED AND PLANNED!!!) and lost booking deposits at each one! So yes, planning a dream destination wedding is an exciting journey filled with anticipation and joy. But let’s be real, amidst the excitement, the budget often becomes a concern. The good news is, with careful planning and smart decisions (unlike the many I made), you can have the wedding of your dreams without blowing your budget. In this guide, we'll explore practical tips to help you budget for your destination wedding while still creating the magical day you've always envisioned.

Research Off-Peak Seasons: Choosing the right time for your destination wedding can have a significant impact on your budget. Research the off-peak seasons for your desired location; accommodations tend to offer lower rates during these times. Not only will this save you money, but you'll also avoid the crowds, allowing for a more intimate celebration. This may also help out with vendor negotiations, I’ll tell you how shortly!

Prioritize Your Expenses: Sit down with your partner (or not? lol) and determine what aspects of your wedding are most important to you. Whether it's the venue, photography, or entertainment, prioritize your expenses accordingly. By focusing your budget on the elements that matter most to you, you can create a memorable wedding without overspending on less essential details. I focused so much on small details, and while I look back now and love every single one of them, they are the things my guests never talk about when they relive the fairytale my wedding was.

Consider All-Inclusive Resorts with Perks: There are so many all-inclusive resorts that offer killer perks! You can earn free private events, rooms, upgrades, and even free flights group/wedding-friendly resorts. Can you imagine a free wedding AND free travel? We can!

Maximize Your Concessions: I definitely took advantage of my free room refunds! I was able to add a little extra floral love to my vision based on the free rooms I earned. If you’re on a budget, be sure to shop around for resorts that offer the best perks!

DIY Decor and Details: This is where I shined! I did so many DIYs that I can’t even remember what I paid for at this point! I did my own table numbers, chair decals, dancefloor decals, party favors, welcome bag goodies. Get creative and DIY as much as you can for your destination wedding. From centerpieces to wedding favors, putting in some effort yourself can save a significant amount of money. Enlist the help of friends and family to assist with DIY projects, turning them into fun pre-wedding activities.

Explore Local Vendors: All of my vendors were locals, and this helped in more ways than I could’ve imagined! Not only will this save you money on travel and accommodation costs for vendors, but local vendors also have a better understanding of the area and can provide valuable insights and recommendations.

Negotiate with Vendors: Don't be afraid to negotiate prices with vendors. Many are willing to work within your budget, especially if you're booking multiple services with them, but also, if you’re booking during Off-Peak season. Be upfront about your budget constraints and see if there's room for negotiation or customization of packages.

Use Credit Card Rewards and Points: If you have a travel rewards credit card, consider using the points or miles you've accumulated to cover flights, hotels, or other travel expenses related to your destination wedding. This can help offset costs and make your dream wedding more affordable.

Plan Ahead and Track Expenses: Start budgeting for your destination wedding as early as possible and keep track of all your expenses. Having a clear budget and monitoring your spending can help prevent overspending and ensure that you stay within your financial means. Consider using budgeting tools or apps to help you stay organized and on track.

Conclusion: Planning a destination wedding on a budget requires careful consideration and strategic planning, but it's entirely achievable with the right approach. You can have the wedding of your dreams without breaking the bank. With a little creativity and resourcefulness, your destination wedding will be a magical celebration that you and your loved ones will cherish forever.
